Dubai Design Week took place from 26th to 31th October 2015, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. During this period, from 27th to 30th October, Downtown Design – the only stage in the Middle East for the region’s trade professionals to find high quality design from all over the world – entered its 3rd round this year at the Dubai Design District.

[Masters Chair] Kartell, a historical and renowned Italian brand in the field of product and industrial design, is exhibiting a showcase of the latest pieces in the brand’s Contemporary Lifestyle collection, including the Masters chairs in metal finishing by Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitllet. Originally designed in 2009, the Masters was formed by layering the shapes of classic chairs by three design masters; the outlines of the ’Series 7’ by Arne Jacobsen, ‘Eiffel Chair’ by Charles Eames and ‘Tulip Armchair’ by Eero Saarinen are rendered in three dimensions to form the supporting back of the seat. We want to focus attention in coming years even more on quality and preciousness, on the glamor and ‘luxury’ of Kartell plastics, presented with brand-new, exclusive and glossy metal finishes in gold, bronze, silver, gunmetal grey, and copper. Some of Kartell’s best sellers will glisten with these new metallic finishes: Masters, Componibili, Jelly, Matelassé, Shanghai, and Dune.

[Tiripiti Lamp] In an amazing exhibition during the DXBDW, Mexican design brand Tributo is showing its first collection of utility objects for decoration, accessories and furniture, produced by the best Master Craftsman of México. Tiripiti means gold in Purepecha language and is also the name given to the gods that are manifestations of the sun. The usage of hammered copper in this lamp produces an intense and evocative brightness.

Communicating through objects is their point of strength; where handmade objects are influenced by the heritage and history of the artisan that makes them.

[Rockerfeller Table] The Danish brand MUUBS is taking part in Dubai Design Week 2015 with an even edgier collection of design items, where raw inspiration from nature has been strengthened with craftsmanship and a masculine touch. The main material of the Rockerfeller Table is a handmade fiber concrete – a material of cement and sand mixed with fiberglass. This blending provides a very lightweight product having a high strength and a unique colour and appearance, with small air holes and crevices from the casting process.

[Rough Diamond Chandelier] Ben-Tovim Design has been selected to represent Australian emerging design at Dubai Design Week 2015, where the brand is presenting several lighting pieces including the Rough Diamond Chandelier. A six-light feature available in brass, copper or acid-etched black, the Rough Diamond Chandelier features 66 custom 3D printed joints with 23 metres of cut and polished tubing, carefully hand constructed in Melbourne. Rough Diamond Chandelier is a marriage of computer technology and hand-craftsmanship.
